for history................................
i'll suggest all to go though ncert books class 9th 10th 11th and 12th old editions not very expensive....................i believe Rs.60 per book.........or pratiyogita darpan special editions for general studies.....................they are the best.................the good thing about ncert books that u enjoy reading them.............................
wheras in pratiyogita darpan everything will be given to the point.................after reading every page........................dothis..............
make your own notes...........
and highlight what all is important.......................say the sequence of events,
sequence of dynasties,
the monuments constructed,
the art and culture..................
the wars fought.................the important people of the time period........the great works........................make a register and write it in your own handwriting....................
everything u need to know....
history i believe it should be done from ncert 9th to 12th...........
and make a register................
when you complete one chapter just write whatever you feel is important in your own hand writing...........
for example if you are reading modern indian history.........
and say there's this chapter.........development under the british.........
just note this down

this is just an example..........u may do this in any way u like..........as per your convinience..............
there's a lot of time..............
because all other books and manuals only reassert all this...........
and believe me it will not take much time.........
it's a one time investment.......
